New NICE Bus App Helps Blind Riders Navigate Transit Center

 

A new mobile app aims to help blind bus riders navigate one of Nassau’s most bustling stations, the Rosa Parks Hempstead Transit Center. The Nassau Inter-County Express, or NICE, have partnered with Springfield, Illinois-based Sensible Innovations to develop the AWARE app, which is available for free download through Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

Meet Our New Communications Director

NYPTA welcomes Robin Granger as its new Communications Director! Robin is a communications and marketing professional with diverse experience in organizational management and communications.

Robin most recently spent 15 years with the Schenectady County, NY Chamber of Commerce. During that time, she dedicated nearly two years as the lead communications and marketing VP for both the Schenectady and Albany-Colonie Regional Chambers prior to the merger of the two organizations. As the integration occurred, Robin oversaw the complete rebranding process in creating the new Capital Region Chamber. Robin is a former Executive Director of the Cleaning Management Institute, where she managed a professional trade association of more than 1500 members. In that capacity, Robin produced a monthly newsletter and was a contributing writer for an industry-wide publication. Robin also coordinated professional development tracks for the membership and planned conferences and trade shows across the country

Governor Cuomo Announces $112.2 Million in Funding to Support Transportation Enhancements Accross New York

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced $112.2 million in funding has been awarded to 81 projects that support bicycle and pedestrian enhancements and improve air quality across New York. Funding supports projects that include multi-use bicycle and pedestrian facilities, new accessible sidewalks that adhere to regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, improved access to public transportation, and enhanced roadway safety.

Trump to 'Consider' Raising the Gas Tax

President Trump last week said that he is open to raising the gas tax to help pay for infrastructure projects. In an interview with Bloomberg News, Trump said he would "certainly consider" a gas tax hike “if we earmarked money toward the highways.”

Lawmakers in Budget Accord Reject Transportation Program Cuts White House Sought

Congress in its budget agreement for fiscal 2017 rejected a number of cuts in transportation programs that the White House had urged lawmakers to implement, cuts that President Trump has also said he will pursue in his budget proposal for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. As previously reported, the White House Office of Management and Budget on March 24 sent Congress a list of suggested 2017 budget cuts, recommending among other things that lawmakers zero out the Department of Transportation's TIGER infrastructure grant program and cut $400 million in Federal Transit Administration "new starts" funding.
