Innovative real-time passenger information signs that are currently being deployed throughout the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit bus system, recently received a 2015 Project of the Year Award from the Intelligent Transportation Society of New York (ITS-NY). The Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) signs utilize existing GPS tracking technology called MTA Bus Time, which provides riders with wait-time information for city buses and projects this data onto an easy-to-see LED display. The RTPI sign prototypes are both line-powered and solar-powered.

The new Tappan Zee Bridge's footprint can be easily discerned by drivers as they traverse the current crossing. Drivers anticipate zipping along an entirely new crossing by 2018, enjoying smoother traffic with wider lanes and space for shoulders. But what about public transit? There are plans for that, too. A rapid transit bus system, to be dubbed Hudson Links, would traverse most of the Interstate 287 corridor. Hudson Links looks like a real transit system for long-suffering Rockland-to-Westchester commuters.

Ithaca resident Dillon Davis-Tirado won first place in TCAT’s “selfie” contest in celebration of the 10th Annual National Dump the Pump Day held Thursday, June 18. The contest called for submittals from TCAT passengers taking photos of themselves “selfies” on a bus or near a TCAT bus. “The world’s smartest people ride TCAT, along with their smartphones,” said H. Roger Segelken, a charter member of TCAT’s Citizens Advisory Committee, who came up with the idea for a “selfies” contest.

Up to 1,750 people who work at Bombardier will lose their jobs. That news caught the eye of Bombardier employees in New York's North Country who wondered if they are safe from the layoffs. The restructuring was announced in May and will take effect this summer. The company said the cuts will not impact train builders in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

President Obama listed boosting the nation's infrastructure funding as an area where progress is possible before he leaves office in 2017. Asked during a joint press conference with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff about legislation he plans to pursue during his final months in the White House, Obama identified a long-term transportation bill as a priority. Obama has proposed a $478 billion transportation bill that he says would cover six years worth of infrastructure projects. The administration has proposed paying for the measure by taxing corporate profits that are stored overseas through a process that is known as "repatriation."

A new study by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials shows that state departments of transportation put $16.3 billion into public transit systems in fiscal 2013, while the federal government's support for transit that year was $10.1 billion. The nation's transit system encompasses urban and rural bus, paratransit, light rail, commuter rail, subway and passenger ferry services. Funding for these systems come from a variety of federal, state and local sources. This report only covers the state DOTs' transit contributions and does not survey local agencies.

Boston, MA -- Teens in Boston and three other cities now have the chance to sign up for a monthly “youth pass” courtesy of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The “youth pass” costs $26 a month; a 7-day pass for $7 will also be available. For most MBTA commuters, a monthly pass allowing unlimited travel on the subway and local bus lines currently costs $75, while a 7-day pass costs $19. "The Youth Pass Pilot is a step in the right direction to find new and innovative ways to provide access at a price that is affordable for young people to get to work, school and extracurricular activities,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in a statement.
